What is City Service?

City Service is a week-long service trip to New York City, working with the New York City Rescue Mission (NYCRM), America’s oldest homeless shelter and soup kitchen. This will be the fifteenth year that FOCUS students have served at the Mission.

What is the purpose?

  • -To serve the poor and homeless
  • -To deepen our understanding of homelessness and the needs of the homeless
  • -To forge relationships with people we may not have the chance to otherwise
  • -To change the way we think about service and the homeless
  • -To learn what the Christian faith has to say about social justice and our responsibility to serve those around us

What is the New York City Rescue Mission?

Located in the heart of New York City’s Chinatown neighborhood, the NYCRM has been reaching out to the city’s homeless population since 1872. Its objective has never changed – to provide hope, food, clothing, and shelter to men in crisis. Overnight residents receive nutritious meals, housing, medical/social service support, and clean clothing. They are also invited to enroll in the Mission’s long-term recovery program, where job skills training, GED preparation, and substance abuse counseling are offered. No smoking, drinking, or drugs are allowed on the premises, and all residents attend chapel daily. For more information about the NYCRM, please visit www.nycrescue.org.

Although the NYCRM is a men’s shelter, many women work on the premises. FOCUS has brought majority-female groups there each year and never once encountered any difficulty. The safety of our students is paramount. They will be under adult supervision at all times and will not be placed in any position of danger.

What will we do?

Our team will spend its days working alongside the NYCRM’s long-term residents, assisting in work projects, preparing and serving meals, as well as helping with the Mission’s administrative needs. Our time at the mission will be balanced with small group discussions, team dinners, and outings to different parts of NYC.

Where will we stay?

We will be staying at the Hostelling International, just three blocks away from Central Park on the upper west side. Students will be staying in dorm style rooms with adult leaders. Their website is www.hinewyork.org.

How much will it cost?

Cost TBD. Note: transportation to and from the program is not included in the cost. A deposit is not required, but full payment for the program is due when accepted to the program. Scholarships are available; contact your area staff for more information. Other financial questions or general questions about the program should be directed to the FOCUS Programs Office at programs@infocus.org or 203-505-7522.
