Charlottesville Weekend

Dates for 2010 to be posted shortly.

For southern regions-  Students from Raleigh, Richmond, Greater Washington Area and VA Boarding Schools will be in attendance.

(If you live in another FOCUS area and are interested in a weekend program, please see our Princeton Weekend Page )

Meet old friends and make new ones! Enjoy the town of Charlottesville and the University of Virginia. In this setting students in grades 9-12 who live or attend schools in Raleigh, Greater Washington Area, Richmond, or the Virginia Boarding Schools can enjoy a change of pace from the regular weekend.

This overnight for students from our Southern regions is designed to be a fun and relaxing time. In recognition that some schools allow limited weekend travel and certain students will be taking the SATs Saturday morning, we’ve decided to condense this program into only two glorious days!

Groups will arrive, check in and head out for shopping or lunch on Charlottesville’s Historic Downtown Mall before the program ‘officially’ begins in the afternoon. A group bonding activity will be followed by the first talk and a chance for small group discussions. Dinner will be provided by the program. In the evening there will be another teaching and discussion time, and a concert by a special musical guest. At the end of the evening there will be time for groups of students staying together to have a special cabin time.

Sunday morning we will have breakfast on the lawn of the University of Virginia. The morning meeting will have an extended time for music as well as the final talk. The program will go together to get lunch on the corner before some groups have to head out for home. Those that are able to stay will be able to take advantage of some special afternoon activities, including a guided UVA tour from FOCUS college students!

What does the Program Fee Cover?

The program fee for Charlottesville Weekend is $50 and will cover dinner Saturday and breakfast Sunday, housing costs, the speaker, special musical guests, as well all program games and activities Saturday and Sunday. Students will be responsible for covering their lunch on Saturday and Sunday, and any transportation costs from their region. FOCUS regions may organize carpools with staff and volunteers. There will also be driving and parking directions for those bringing their own vehicles.
